I have ruminated over the recent happenings of late concerning the popular internet fraudster called Hushpuppy and it brings back the old saying to my mind that indeed there is dignity in labour.
Before now, the few times I had seen this Hushpuppy of a guy on the internet I remember always having this sick feeling inside of me that something was just not right concerning him. I watched as he flaunts so much wealth online and again I asked myself to what end exactly??? For a man who had good values in life, flaunting of wealth should not be your priority!
And there were those who envied him after seeing all this show of wealth online and go as far as singing his praises. On my own I tried to search him out online to see what job he does or what business he was into and always, this search came to a dead end. This made the suspicion increase in me that something was just off about this guy.
Finally, just a few weeks ago, the whole world came to know that he is indeed a fraudster, a big one at that. And it all made sense to me. Suddenly, all those who sang his praise before now have changed their song.
A lot of folks call me old school but I really don’t mind because my old school way of doing things have always ended up being the right way. It puts me off how many youths have become so lazy and seek to acquire wealth in dubious ways all because we are in the so called ‘jet age’. Is jet age about stealing, looting and defrauding others? The answer is no.
So how exactly will the Hushpuppy guy be feeling in jail right now? So which is better? To have continued working hard hoping that things will one day get better and brighter for him, or to end up in jail after enjoying a fake life of luxury as a result of ill-gotten wealth?
There is reward and dignity in working hard. There is reward in earning a living legitimately. There is reward in being a good example for the young generation after us. Ill-gotten wealth will only last for a short time. The feeling of depriving others of their hard-earned resources will always be a torment endured secretly.
For those who are motivated by wealth displayed on social media, know that those flaunting such wealth are only showing you the good side. You don’t get to see how they live in constant fear and torment.
Never feel pressured to make wealth at all cost because last time I checked, we were not in a competition in this life. It is all man to himself. People should rather concentrate on gaining happiness and inner peace rather that getting wealth at all cost.
There are persons that have made their countries proud in various fields of endeavors, from sports to science and technology and even music. But see how this Hushpuppy guy has brought so much disgrace and shame to our dear country Nigeria making it even more difficult for the world out there to trust us.
The young people of this generation really have to sit up and let go of ill-mannered ways and decide to work hard and earn legitimate income. This makes you a better person to yourself, your immediate family, your society and the world at large.
Parents have a big role to play in this too. Most wayward guys out there are products of a failed family system. It is high time parents go back to the old way of doing things. Parents have to teach their young ones good values from an early age. Parents have to teach the little ones how to value hard work and not be lazy, expecting manna to fall from heaven!
Many parents contribute to these lazy youth’s bad ways by giving excuses for them while they are young. You hear statements like “leave him, he’s still a small boy, he doesn’t know anything yet”. And I say “so when exactly is he going to know something and who’s gonna teach him???”
Please, let all hands be on deck to ensure we imbibe good values and know always that it pays to work hard. There is dignity in labour.
