Our little kids are always so simple and playful at heart. They could play and have so much fun that we are tempted to take their words for granted a lot of the time.
A little boy or girl is out there playing and he/she screams “mummy! mummy! Joey is throwing sticks at me!” and you rush down there only to find him/her giggling away! (smiles). Overtime, you may be tempted to take such calls for granted wading it off as them being just kids.
The proverbial boy who used to cry wolf comes to mind.
However, a little word of advice from me would be thus: even if it is stressful to check up on your little ones anytime they call out to you, please just do it. You don’t know when that call might actually be a serious one. I particularly learnt this great lesson during the week.
I was busy on my computer on this cool late afternoon during the week and my little adorable girl was out in the balcony playing. I usually get so engrossed in my work that whenever she comes around me while working, i am in the habit of telling her to just go ahead and keep playing because mummy is really busy.
On this cool late afternoon, while she was out there, she suddenly called out to me, “mummy, mummy, there is something under the car! mummy come quick, there is something under the car!” I felt uncomfortable with the tone of her voice which was filled with fear and i quickly left my work and rushed out to meet her.
She pointed in the direction of what she saw, and lo and behold a snake! It was green and long and it was right under our car which was parked in the compound close to the balcony where my little girl was playing. The snake had chased a lizard to that point and was actually swallowing it right there.
I figured that with the lizard in its mouth and it busy with swallowing, the snake should be less trouble to kill as it may find it difficult to run fast.
Being helpless myself, i called out to my husband, who after seeing it, looked for a wide frying pan (smile), came out and hit the snake. Thereafter, he got a long pole and hit it a couple more times and it died.
After the whole episode, i really sat down and thought to myself, “what if i had dismissed my little girl’s call, thinking she was just being her usual playful and pranking self?”
Just as i was lost in thoughts, she came to me and said, “mummy, i know you thought i was joking when i called out to you, right?” Of course i smiled even more as i held her close to myself in a warm embrace.
- Check up on your kids often, even if you think they are safe.
- Listen and respond whenever they call out to you
- Probe further and try to understand what they are trying to say whenever they talk to you.
