LESSONS LEARNT FROM THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

As I sat on my bed early this morning (1st of July, 2020), I could not help but think about how the whole world has changed in just a few months as a result of the covid-19 pandemic. I was saddened by the number of deaths recorded so far worldwide, the loss of jobs and the increased pain that frontline workers now have to endure just to get their work done. You will agree with me it’s not a good feeling remembering all that.

However, as I sat down ruminating on these thoughts, I told myself there must be something to thank God for and immediately my heart was opened to perceive the bright side of it all and I would like to share that here.

Improved Hygiene

Everyone will agree with me that people have suddenly become cleaner than they were months ago. The pandemic has made citizens of all countries worldwide to value good hygiene as no one wants to contract the disease. People wash their hands several times daily and make use of hand sanitizers.

People do not sneeze anyhow anymore, they instead, do so into their bent elbows or into a napkin or tissue paper. Even children are now so aware of the fact that their hands must be clean at all times. I think this is a good one and it’s nice seeing everyone so hygiene-conscious.

Reduced environmental pollution

For the period of total lockdown worldwide, there was a great reduction in environmental pollution, especially air pollution. Several industries were forced to take a break and this led to almost no fumes/smoke going up into the atmosphere, a situation that was the norm for years unending before the pandemic came on board.

As a result of this, the air we breathe in is actually cleaner and fresher. I am also certain that this will impact positively on the depleting ozone layer.

Noise pollution also greatly reduced as discomforting noises from large industries were missing for months. I am sure everyone could use some serenity. (smile).

Increased well-being

For a lot of persons who have been working non-stop for years, this period has been like being forced to go on leave! Painful as it may be that there were no economic activities for months, the humans who have always carried out these economic activities had to rest their bodies and minds. No doubt, our bodies and minds have gained from this. Well rested bodies lead to increased well-beings. Strength is renewed and the body energized.

More persons exercising

We all need a measure of exercise daily. Surprisingly, even after knowing the importance of this, a lot of folks actually find it hard to exercise on a regular basis because they have to rush off to work or somewhere daily. But I have seen that almost everyone have had ample time to exercise and stay fit during the lockdown period. That of course has done a lot of good to our bodies, health, and minds.

Fine-tuned life values

This lockdown made a lot of persons to deeply reflect on their lives and reorganize their priorities. A lot of folks have seen that everything they have always worked for could be forgotten in a jiffy. Imagine placing work above family all the time just because u have to make ends meet and a little virus comes and wipe lives out.

A lot of persons have really seen the need to love their families and give quality time to loved ones rather than just think of work, work, and more work always. This pandemic has made people reflect soberly on how they had been treating people around them. For once, the love side of people was activated and I think that makes for a better society. Even as we engage in economic activities, there is need to look out for each other always.

New talents/skills

No doubt, staying away from work for months isn’t funny as that results to lack of revenue. A lot of persons were affected and could not go to work for months while others were outrightly dismissed from their jobs.

This has made some people to get in touch with their creative sides as life must go on. Several persons have used this time to learn new skill and fan out those talents that have been lying down low. Many folks cannot believe they can actually do new things that can generate revenue. It is good to see that resilient nature come to play and I know things are keep getting better.

Getting closer to God

This time have no doubt been a trying time in the history of man. Several persons have seen the need to be closer to God and serve Him better. I guess it doesn’t matter what draws you to Him, what matters is that you eventually are drawn to His saving grace. Despite the restriction on places of worship, those who truly love and wish to serve their God have done so even in their homes. Families are spending more time in their daily devotion.

After all said, I encourage everyone to hang in there and not lose hope. By the grace of God we will all overcome this virus and have a better world at the end.
